DANCE CLASSES &

ASPECTS

CLASSIC

Classical dance adheres to a historically fixed set of positions and dance steps, it is more formal in that it uses specific steps, poses and movements. Ballet which is a beautiful art form, follows a strict set of rules and its moves are hundreds of years old, and performed the same way by everyone. Plus this uniformity looks great on stage.

Ballet is very structured, meaning that the ballet dancer or choreographer can’t include any steps that aren’t an accepted part of the art form. The steps are set in stone, and must be done exactly as they’ve been done thousands of times before. No doubt that the ballet dancing remains fo lots of his lovers the only beautiful way of dancing…

MODERNE

Modern dance is set out to challenge the norms and values of the orthodoxy of body movements as those found in ballet. The challenge apears in many aspects like the technique, the choreography, the aesthetics and certainly in the personalities of the dancers. With these dancers the modern dance apears less rigid and seams to have a wide variety of styles less formal: loose posture, unstructured movements, no precise steps. It’s an expression of movement in general. Finally, although modern dance in many ways broke away from certain aspects of ballet, a lot of the movement and pedagogy was basically a reinterpretation of the orthodoxy. For example, in a modern dance class you still do much of the same stuff – tendus, pliés, travelling sequences etc. The technicality of the execution is different from classical ballet, but in many ways it is not a huge difference…
